Finding Her Path into Engineering

Hazel did not set out to work in engineering. Her early interests were centred around computers, and she also ran her own business. After the recession, she joined EKSPAN in 2009, only expecting it to be a short term position. But her natural curiosity quickly changed that.
Hazel likes to understand how things work and has never been afraid to ask questions.

Her colleagues will confirm that she asks plenty of them. This drive to learn helped her take on new responsibilities, move across different departments and build a deep knowledge of the business. Many years later she is still here, still learning and still enjoying the work.

What Hazel Finds Rewarding

For Hazel, the people make the biggest difference. EKSPAN’s supportive and collaborative team creates an environment she enjoys being part of. The variety of work also keeps her motivated, as no two projects are the same and every day brings something new to learn.

Embracing Challenges

Hazel explains that engineering is filled with challenges and problems to solve. For her, this is one of the best parts of the role. Each day is different and each project brings new lessons, keeping the work fresh and rewarding.

Advice for Women Considering Engineering

Hazel believes that the idea of engineering being a men’s world is outdated. Instead of taking on this viewpoint, her advice is simple for anyone considering the industry.

If you are curious and enjoy learning, engineering is worth exploring. You do not need a fixed plan from the start, simply take the step, and stay open to new opportunities and you may find a career you truly enjoy
