GOVAN-PARTICK BRIDGE, GLASGOW
GOVAN-PARTICK BRIDGE, GLASGOW
The Govan–Partick Bridge is one of Scotland’s most significant new active travel crossings – reconnecting communities on either side of the River Clyde for the first time since the ferry service ceased in the 1960s.
Since its opening in September 2024, more than one million people have already crossed the bridge on foot or by bike. Designed as one of the longest opening pedestrian and cycle bridges in Europe, the structure delivers a vital economic, social, and environmental link in the heart of Glasgow.
Connecting Water Row in Govan to Pointhouse Quay beside the Riverside Museum, the crossing forms part of the Clyde Waterfront Regeneration, linking communities, education, and healthcare – including a direct route between the University of Glasgow’s Gilmorehill campus and the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.
WHAT WE DELIVERED
EKSPAN were engaged to design and install both permanent and temporary bearing systems, providing engineered solutions that enabled safe construction and long-term performance of the new crossing.
Our scope of works included:
- Precision installation ensuring correct articulation and load transfer for the 650-tonne swing span
- Design and provision of temporary uplift bearings to support the moving span during construction
- Supply and installation of permanent bridge bearings for long-term resilience
- Temporary works design to facilitate safe and controlled installation
WHY BRIDGE BEARINGS MATTER
Bridge bearings are critical to structural health, ensuring loads are safely transferred and movement is properly accommodated. Without effective bearings, bridges face accelerated deterioration and compromised safety.
EKSPAN design, manufacture, and install a full suite of bearing solutions to meet every structural demand, including:
- Structural Bearings – EN1337 Compliant
- Structural Bearings – BS5400 Compliant
- Industrial Bearings – Bespoke Bearings
Our systems are engineered for resilience, durability, and long-term performance – ensuring infrastructure like the Govan–Partick Bridge continues to serve communities for generations.
PROJECT OUTCOMES
- Permanent and temporary bearing solutions designed and delivered by EKSPAN Experts
- Safe support of the 650-tonne moving span during construction
- Precision installation to ensure correct load transfer and articulation
- Long-term durability built into the structure’s performance
