EKSPAN SUPPORTED BALFOUR BEATTY ON THE LEEDS STATION IMPROVEMENT WORKS – DELIVERING TECHNICAL BEARING INSTALLATION AND CONTROLLED JACKING OPERATIONS ABOVE THE HISTORIC MILL GOIT CHANNEL.
As part of the wider Leeds Station Sustainable Travel Gateway scheme – a £46.1M project to improve access and pedestrian infrastructure around the station – EKSPAN were engaged to assist Balfour Beatty with the installation of critical structural bearings across the Mill Goit. With a heritage-sensitive location and tight spatial constraints, the project demanded exceptional planning, on-site precision, and safe sequencing to support phased beam installation and structural load transfer.
EKSPAN SUPPORT
Our scope of works included the following key services:
- Installation of elastomeric bearings onto newly constructed bearing shelves
- Live on-site support during steel beam landing
- Supply and operation of 25No 100T jacks for controlled raising and lowering of the structure
- Full de-jacking sequence to enable transfer to permanent bearing supports
- Close collaboration with project engineers to ensure safe bearing cast-in and structural continuity
Given the presence of adjacent Grade-II listed structures, a careful and collaborative approach was vital. EKSPAN’s expertise in structural movement and support systems ensured a smooth transition from temporary packers to permanent supports – while avoiding any disruption to live station
