Adu Dhabi Airport – Midfield Terminal Bearing Supply & Inspection Of Installation

EKSPAN were instructed by Eversendai Engineering to design, manufacture and supply 522 no mechanical and elastomeric bearings for installation on 58 bridges, on two levels.

The construction of the 700,000m3 Midfield Terminal building, scheduled for completion in July 2017, is part of Abu Dhabi International Airport’s expansion programme to meet the significant volume of flight passengers and ensure rapid growth of the Capital’s business and tourism industries.

The Terminal is located between the airport’s two runways (hence its name) to minimise passengers connectivity time and maximise parking stands on the piers which will accommodate up to 65 aircraft.

The Midfield Terminal building (constructed from 69,000 tons of steel, 680,000m3 of concrete, and approximately 500,000m3 of steel and glass cladding) will be one of the region’s largest structures.

During the four year construction phase, which commenced in 2013, EKSPAN were contracted to supply the bearings to the aircraft gate link bridges and carry out inspections of the bearings on site following installation.

EKSPAN’s Workscope

EKSPAN were instructed by Eversendai Engineering to design, manufacture and supply 522 no mechanical and elastomeric bearings for installation on 58 bridges, on two levels. These bearings were a combination of fixed, guided, free and elastomeric bearings which were manufactured and supplied at specified stages to suit the Midfield Terminal construction.

During the construction phase EKSPAN were then contracted to visit site to inspect a selection of bridge bearings installed by Eversendai Engineering, at bridges 9, 10 & 11 of pier 2. All bearings inspected by EKSPAN appeared to be installed correctly with no issues to report and the contractor had taken reasonable measures to protect the bearings whilst associated construction works progressed.
