As part of Women in Construction Week, we’re celebrating the women whose contributions strengthen our industry every day. Today, we are shining a spotlight on Michelle Bates, whose journey into manufacturing highlights the power of confidence and supportive leadership.
Finding a Place in Manufacturing
When Michelle first joined EKSPAN, she knew the company was involved in engineering and construction, but she didn’t realise to what extent. Yet what immediately stood out to her was how special the team was.
“EKSPAN is all about the people, and the team is fantastic.”
Michelle’s unexpected move into engineering opened the door to an abundance of learning, growth and career opportunities, and it quickly became something that she was extremely passionate about.
Shaping Her Own Role
One of Michelle’s proudest achievements is shaping a brand new role from the ground up.
“My role didn’t exist, and I had free rein to create something that suited everyone.”
With the trust of the management team, Michelle created processes which reinforced and strengthened the business. The autonomy she felt during the process, paired with strong guidance from the team, allowed her to excel with the utmost confidence.
Learning Through Challenges
With no background in engineering or manufacturing, Michelle faced a steep learning curve. But she never felt alone.
“I didn’t have the knowledge about how the industry works when I started, but the team supported me to learn how clients and the business operate.”
Michelle’s journey shows that you don’t need to have every skill on day one, just the right mindset and a great support network.
Advice for Women Considering Manufacturing
Michelle acknowledges that manufacturing is still vastly male dominated, but encourages women not to let that hold them back.
“Manufacturing is a male dominant industry, but this shouldn’t put women off. It’s high tech, innovative, and full of opportunities.”

- Explore roles that interest you
- Look into college or training pathways
- Connect with industry networks
- Seek out organisations championing women in the sector
